More About Me
I have been teaching, dancing, and performing Latin styles such as salsa, bachata, and merengue for the past four years. In these four years I have achieved a very strong level in social dancing and have made a consistent effort to refine my style to reflect what I feel is the most authentic way of dancing these musics, leading me to learn a lot about the way salsa is danced in South America, Puerto Rico, Cuba and NYC, and how bachata and merengue are danced in the Dominican Republic. I have also choreographed 3 different pieces, with the most recent being a 4 dance showcase of different Colombian dances (bambuco, abozao, joropo, and cumbia) that was performed at my university's Latin American folkloric showcase. I choreographed, taught, and performed these four dances over the course of two semesters, achieving a strong level of proficiency and knowledge in this relatively short time.
Interested in learning, performing and competing in joropo.
I'm Looking For
I am looking for a female dance partner who will immerse themself in, dance, and perform the dance of Joropo llanero with me.
Joropo llanero is a Venezuelan folkloric and popular partner dance danced in accompaniment to the Venezuelan national music, joropo, which is played by a harpist or bandolista, a cuatrista, a bassist, and a maraquero. The music can run a full gamut of serene and beautiful to aggressive and high energy, which is reflected by the dancers partnerwork and individual footwork. It comes from the llanos region of Venezuela which shares a border with Colombia and is therefore reflective of the llanero, or plainsman culture that surrounds it.
I want someone who will with me aim to learn and become experts in the two modalities commonly danced today, joropo criollo, which is the most traditional form, and joropo espectaculo which is a modern iteration developed in the llanos of Venezuela and Colombia, both of which are showcased at competitions in llanero festivals across both countries. To do this, we will not only learn the dances, but also do extensive research on llanero culture to ensure our performance and practice of these dances speak to its origins.
The end goal is to achieve a level where we can showcase and perform the dances alongside joropo musicians, at folkloric festivals, in Latin dance spaces across NYC, and compete in joropo competitions.
The only non negotiables I am looking for are a passion for Latin American folklore and culture, a willingness to learn from scratch and build with a partner, and an investment in studying culture ourside of only the realm of dance. However, some plusses would be having experience in Latin American dance forms, either through folkloric dance, Latin dance performance, or simply social dancing. Having confidence in spins and footwork will also prove to be important. Finally, I believe that a partner of Colombian or Venezuelan heritage would be best because they may have a closer personal connection to the dance form, but I am looking for passion more than anything.
