More About Me
About me: I'm a professional dance educator. I believe the greatest compliment you can give to something you love is to give back and I've done nothing if I have not added to the art. I want to demonstrate and educate more so than win a competition(that is nice but does not fulfill me).
I am fit, extensively trained, disciplined, and motivated.
I am not a typical professional dancer. I enjoy cross-training in multiple disciplines: ballroom (American/international), also in street/social forms (such as Lindy hop, W.C.S., Argentine Tango, Salsa, Zouk, Shag, etc). I focus on understanding/preserving our dance history. My greatest strength in my opinion is my knowledge base as a dance historian as well as a large personal dance library (both print and film)
Researching dance history is one of my great passions as to understand dance forms throughout their evolutions. I am a generalist not a specialist so I have spread myself thin, but gained valuable insight and movement/expression from the experience. My passion is studying and rebuilding the genesis and evolution of the art of dance to bring back the lost knowledge and open minds to continue pushing the art to new levels. To let people see what is possible if you see the big picture without rules and self imposed limitations the way it was when people created the dances, instead only following others. I am a working pro i.e. I don't teach here and there on the side...I do it every day...I study and take it serious.
My major goals are teaching related, to expand the industry knowledge base and empower future generations through exposure to our rich history. I'm currently reconstructing lost 1920's dance forms or the Collegiate styles as well as ongoing work towards saving Peabody, Hustle, Shag, and Ragtime era dances. I plan to have a youtube channel up before years end which will teach lost dances, history, characterization elements, teaching theories, and technical elements rarely taught outside of private instruction. I also have a history website I maintain and travel occasionally on research trips out of state to collect and preserve rare documents related to dance history.
PS.I love fusing different systems elements to expand personal interpretation/expression. I'll learn anything, but refuse to be a copy of someone else. Nor am I willing to solely train or compete in modern forms. You must be willing to learn vintage styles of dances as it's my field of expertise.
I'm Looking For
[Disclaimer: I know that the perfect partner with everything I want is most likely not just going to pop up....these are what I would like not what I will necessarily get in a partner.]
I DO NOT WANT SOMEONE WITH A HUGE EGO; I want a humble, friendly, open minded partner...not an elitist snob beyond approach (I do want a diva, just not the elitist attitude). That does more harm than good for the art.
Mental Traits: Must be open to teaching, lecturing, and performing. Self motivated, driven to personal excellence, positive training mentality (i.e. doesn't quit, get frustrated, or give up easily), good work ethic (you will want to train instead of complain about the work), creative, outgoing/friendly/social, a can do person, not easily intimidated, adventurous, likes to learn, has to be able to handle constructive criticism. Also, a open mind to knew ideas would be good if working with someone like me.
Physical Traits:
Height: 5'5" or shorter due to heels and my height 5'8".
Weight: The lighter the better as long as you are healthy, up to 120 is fine, due to acrobatics/lifts/drops. I weight 143 lbs. currently, but will gain up to 150 if needed.
Training background: Ballet/Modern/Tap/urban background is a plus
Schedule: must be willing to train a MINIMUM of 6 hours per week and also social dance 1 night per week. Time frame is negotiable, however due to my schedule it may need to be during off hours daytime/after 9pm/weekends.
Please pass this on to dancers you know or contact me if interested, you never know unless you try. Don't be shy about inquiring everyone starts as a beginner; I learn new things everyday so I am very humble.
I'm into everything so we'll have to discuss focus areas for primary training.
