More About Me
I've competed in silver smooth and standard, have let go of rhythm for a while (still dance it socially), so that's an ecclectic mix of silver and bronze. I also enjoy a good two step. Since the dancing in IA is limited, I look for dance opportunities when I travel and often use this site to ask about dance opportunities. I learned to dance in Nashville (TN), great dance community and incredible teachers, I still visit and train there with Shalene Archer when I have the time to compete. Since earning tenure at my University, I've been able to make more time to dance. I dance mostly in the St. Paul area (a very rich dance community, lots a great dancers and people), though it does require some travel. There, I get to work with Julie Jacobson-Kendle. I feel very fortunate in my teachers, both are former US Champions, which makes up for a certain lack of talent on my part. I also travel to Seattle (family, friends, and dancing), Rochester (MN), Chicago, and sometimes Kansas City. I got to see the Russian Nationals in St. Petersburg a few of years ago, that was fabulous. Locally, I dance in Iowa City, sometimes in Cedar Rapids and Waterloo, and occasionally the Quad Cities and Chicago. As you can tell from the photos, I compete. But while I enjoy competitions, for me, dancing is primarily about the joy and artistry of the movement. It's a spiritual and artistic high to dance one's whole body in (near) perfect unison with another who is able to do the same. It's also about building communities...I was fortunate to learn to dance in a very rich and diverse dance community. While I'm not a dance teacher (I know my limitations), since we have few decent teachers in Iowa, I've tried to pass on what I've learned both to build up the dance community wherever I'm at. That's also how I end up having local partners with whom to dance. Sadly, my main Iowa dance partner has now moved to MN (good for her, I sometimes stay with her when I visit, but it means I have fewer well trained partners here.) She's now training with one of the top teachers up there, who, after then first lesson, told her that there was no point in her competing in bronze, he's taking her straight to silver. I also try to stay in decent shape. But I had hip and shoulder surgery (no replacement parts) a while ago, so I'm just now getting back to where I can exercise more fully. I'm a bit heavier than the dance photos, that's been due to limitations on activity for the past couple of years.

I'm Looking For
I think of both dancing and friendship as their own reward--there doesn't need to be a link to romance. That said, I'm open to dating, it's just not my priority. What is necessary is a sense of passion and joy in dance along with a desire to always grow and learn. Of course, it's difficult to have good dance chemistry (or any other kind) without a rich friendship and good communication skills. I'm very interested in good technique, but my dance relationships have always been characterized by good humor, laughter, and friendly critique. I've never had one of those infamous dance "fights" with any of my regular partners. Married or single is not a problem, so long as it's not a problem with my partner and her spouse. Bodies in motion stay young. As do minds. And hearts. I don't get people who send emails with "instructions" on how to find a photo of themself. Why not just show the photo? Or if you want to limit access, that's what the private gallery is all about.
